New Deed Registration Law 2018

On 20th March 2018, Pyidaungsu Htuttaw passed the Deed Registration Law 2018 (“DRL”) to repeal and replace the Registration Act 1908. The effective date of the DRL will be determined later in a notification to be issued by the Government.

The DRL establishes the Registration Office for registration of deeds for movable properties and immovable properties. The documents required for the said registrations remain unchanged. Any document related to immovable property with a value of more than MMK100,000, e.g. Land Purchase Agreement, Land Lease Agreement and Gift Deed, must be registered with the Registration Office.

Registration of any document related immovable property with a value of less than MMK100,000 is optional.  Other documents, e.g. Family Settlement Agreement, court’s decision, arbitration award, can also be registered under the DRL.
