Update on Trademark Re-Filing in Myanmar

From 25th February 2022 to 1st March 2022, the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) of the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar held training sessions for trademark representatives (attorney/agents) on the intellectual property laws of Myanmar, including the Trademark Law 2019.

The purpose of the training is to enhance the quality of the attorneys/representatives in the intellectual property laws and practices.  The training topics included the role and importance of local and international representatives, the international IP treaties and conventions, the trademark application form (TM1 Form), the trademark representative appointment form (TM2 Form), the rights of holders of registered trademarks, the non-registrable marks, the International Classifications of Goods and Services, the technical knowledge of the online filing and payment systems.

The attendees were mostly attorneys from law firms and brand owner companies. The IPD granted certificates to attendees who passed the post-training test.

The IPD may within 2022 announce the second phase of the soft opening for re-filing of registered trademarks by opening counters (physical re-filing) and the rates of the official fees for re-filing trademarks to be payable by e-payment.
